Best bets for Hot Toys’ SDCC’16 reveals

Which movie figures will Hot Toys debut at SDCC’16?

I always get super excited the week before SDCC. There’s that final anticipation before counting down to Wednesday’s Preview Night. Specifically for all the toy companies putting out teases of what we can expect the rest of the show. One I’m most looking forward to is the upcoming Hot Toys releases.

Hot Toys doesn’t spoil anything so don’t count on seeing figures of 2017 films like Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 or Thor: Raganarok. Considering the current licenses and movie characters that haven’t been done yet, Hot Toys still has more than enough options to make for a thrilling SDCC. Here’s my best bets on what we can expect to see starting next week.

Star Wars

Hot Toys went after the characters from A New Hope hard. Most of the principal characters have been done now. There’s just one main character left — Moff Tarkin. The original main villain of the Star Wars saga hasn’t had a 12” figure since Hasbro released one ages ago. Once Tarkin arrives, we’ll be done with A New Hope … unless Hot Toys decides on a Porkins figure.

With ANH out of the way, it’s time to move on to some other films in the saga. An Empire Strikes Back version of Yoda is already up for pre-order and a Return of the Jedi Boba Fett is now available. Not to mention the prequels thus far being untouched. My best bet is Hot Toys turns its attention on ESB. From the Hoth attires of Luke, Han and Leia; Bespin versions of Han, Leia and Chewie in addition to Lando and the bounty hunters, Empire is a figure goldmine. I’m guessing we’ll see Lando and Hoth Han.

Force Awakens still has a number of viable characters. General Leia and General Hux seem likely, but Poe Dameron has to make his debut at SDCC.  I’m sure Hot Toys would love to release a hermit Luke figure as well.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Yes, Hot Toys’ Captain America: Civil War series already has figures lined up that won’t be out until 2017, but there’s still one major player left. I’m sure the reason we didn’t see Spider-Man yet was due to Hot Toys wanting to coincide its release closer to Spider-Man Homecoming. With no costume change this is a figure that works with both films.

Daredevil Season 2 poster - The Punisher, Daredevil and Elektra_3

Elsewhere on the Marvel front, expect to see figures of the Netflix Daredevil series. Daredevil and Punisher were teased earlier so they’re locks. The Kingpin and Elektra also seem like viable options. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Jessica Jones and Luke Cage as well. I’m still hopeful for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. figures. Maybe a Daisy and Ward to test the waters.

Movie wise, Hot Toys just about seems caught up. Unless they revisit older films and make an Aldrich Killian Mandarin version from Iron Man 3 or an Alexander Pierce from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

DC Cinematic Universe

With just three films underway in the DC movie universe, Hot Toys doesn’t have as wide an assortment of characters to select. There’s still enough for some reveals however including potentially the biggest reveal of the show.

On the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice front there’s three viable candidates. We haven’t see the rest of the Justice League in full costume yet. Aquaman was featured early on and even got included in most of the BvS toy lines. He seems like a lock. I’m less sure about Lex Luthor though. Hot Toys doesn’t do a lot of civilian figures. But Lex isn’t an ordinary suited villain so he’s possible. Finally, Doomsday. Hot Toys loves big, brutish characters and he’d be a perfect centerpiece for the BvS display.

Hot Toys The Joker Arkham Asylum version -close up main

Suicide Squad will likely get the bulk of the attention. Harley Quinn, a regular Joker to compliment the Arkham Asylum version and Deadshot seem guaranteed. Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang and Katana also seem likely bets with Rick Flagg and Diablo being early longshots.

Those are my picks. Which figures are you hoping Hot Toys reveals at SDCC?
