DC Comics reviews for week of 9/21/16 – Batman #7, Superman #7, Justice League #5

Superman #7

Superman get back to its wheelhouse in a charming character-focused issue. This simple, laid back outing with Superman and family is one of my favorite overall DC Rebirth issues yet.

After a busy day of and stopping by to visit some friends, Superman decides to unwind with Lois and Jon with a night at the fair. But even with promising Lois Superman is off the clock, Clark finds it difficult for Superman to truly have a night off.

Between Action Comics and Justice League, there’s no shortage of seeing Superman fighting. Occasionally there’s that feeling of reading one Superman issue you’ve read them all. It’s why writers Patrick Gleeson and Peter J. Tomasi’s approach has been so welcomingly refreshing. Superman doesn’t have to take a back seat to let anyone else shine, this comic doesn’t need panel to panel action. It’s just about the world’s greatest superhero trying to be just as amazing a father and husband.

Superman is always cast as DC’s Big Blue Boy Scout. Tomasi and Gleeson don’t run from that notion and embrace it. The family dynamic has been the best aspect of the title and it’s front and center in this issue.

Jorge Jimenez draws a prototypical heroic Superman and his Jon is youthful and energetic. Jimenez’s characters are very expressive and filled with personality. There’s a playful vibe to Jimenez’s work that makes him a perfect fit for this more reserved look at Superman’s life. Alejandro Sanchez’s colors beautifully compliment the art and help establish the soothing, relaxing mood.

News headlines, a heated political season and terrorist scares make the real world a difficult place to endure sometimes. Superman #7 can’t fix the world’s woes, but it sure did make it a lot more enjoyable for just the briefest of moments. This is easily my must-read recommendation of the week if not the month.
