DC Comics reviews for week of 9/28/16 – Teen Titans #1, Titans #3

Wonder Woman #7

Like Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman has a non-traditional storytelling format. The biggest difference has been Wonder Woman’s alternate story — a Year One spin — has been a brilliant, compelling look at Diana’s origin. The present day story, The Lies, has dutifully plugged along, but hasn’t been nearly as engaging.

Greg Rucka isn’t dragging the story out for the sake of stretching it out, but it’s lacked a sense of urgency. The Lies wraps in this issue with Wonder Woman and Cheetah confronting Andres Cadulo before he can unleash Uzkartaga.

As far as major threats go,  Uzkartaga barely registers. For the buildup, the payoff is underwhelming as he’s just as easily dismissed as his henchmen.

The issue’s highlight comes as it now feeds directly into the Year One storyline. That’s an interesting approach as typically the flashbacks are the ones advancing the present story not vice versa.

Artist Liam Sharp is doing some incredibly complex, challenging layouts. Occasionally, it’s hard to follow his panels as a result, but the art continues to be a strong selling point.

Rucka’s vision for the overall story is starting to take shape. I still think this one of the Rebirth titles that will be better appreciated in collected format where readers can take it all in over 12-14 issues in one sitting.
