Aquaman #8

Unstoppable kicks off with Aquaman #8 with a foe that’s may as well be Undersea Doomsday. But just when it seems like another invincible monster on the loose storyline, Writer Dan Abnett throws in a great reveal with an old school Silver Age villain.

This is a foe Aquaman really needs his Justice League allies to battle so it’ll be interesting to see how Abnett plays this battle out. Done correctly, and at this point it’s hard to doubt Abnett will stumble, this could be a defining arc in showcasing Aquaman and The Drift’s power and skill.

Abnett also adds a dose of Atlantis Game of Thrones to the title. Mera is on a quest to prove she’s worthy to marry Aquaman and agrees to study at The Temple of the Widowhood. Their leader, Mother Cetea, would fit right in hanging with Cersei and The Queen of Thrones. Some of the character interactions legitimately had me laughing out loud. This is a fun title and it’s only getting better.

aquaman-8-interior-artAquaman has three rotating artists. Of the trio, Scott Eaton is the least flashy. His strength is the more laid back moments, which works for Mera’s storyline. Eaton is perfectly capable during the action scenes, but it lacks that next level of detail and dynamic character positioning of his fellow Aquaman artists.

The thought of Aquaman battling an unbeatable force initially sounded uninspired, but I’m very excited about the direction Abnett will take this storyline. Aquaman has clawed and scratched and at this point, it warrants inclusion among DC Rebirth’s best titles.
