DC Comics reviews for week of 10/5/16 – Superman #8, Batman #8
Green Arrow #8
We’d gotten a mini-breather from The Ninth Circle storyline with a glimpse at Emi’s path. But now, writer Benjamin Percy and artist Otto Schmidt are reunited for the next big arc Island of Scars.
Green Arrow is stranded on an island. Sound familiar? In this case, he only has to play survivalist for a few days before Black Canary finds him. For the bulk of the issue, Percy rekindles that magical spark between Green Arrow and Black Canary, right down to talking about chili. This is classic GA/BC interaction and it’s funny how this along with Superman & Lois Lane really felt missing with the rise of the New 52. Most of all it’s just fun to read a comic about characters that just reads correct. Percy knows the characters from Arrow’s flowery flirting to Canary’s confidence.
Schmidt’s art is gorgeous. He really captures the beauty of a deserted island making it the closest thing GA and BC will likely have to a real honeymoon. Naturally not all is as it seems on the island as Diggle finds out.
There wasn’t much action here save some bear encounters. Maybe it would be risky in lesser hands, but Percy and Schmidt make this another pleasant diversion in their rock-solid run.
