After Jack Bauer and Wayne Palmer, Tony Almeida was my favorite character on 24. As of one of the few surviving cast members from the original series, I’m geeked that Carlos Bernard is reprising his role on 24: Legacy.
Season 5 remains my favorite of the series, but Season 7 and Season 3 are my runner-ups. After the largely worthless Season 6, Season 7 saw the unexpected return of Almeida. (Spoilers follow).
Like Wayne Palmer and Tony’s wife, Michelle, Tony was presumed dead. But Tony didn’t come back to help Jack and CTU. Instead, he was positioned for most of the season as Jack’s main adversary. I always dig the former friend returns as a villain plot line. That’s in no small part why GoldenEye is my favorite Bond film.
TVLine reports Almeida will be brought back into the fray at some point in Legacy. The 24 reboot finds Corey Hawkins seeking CTU’s assistance after being targeted by terrorists.
‘Tony Almeida is one of the most indelible personalities in the 24 universe, at times loyal and loving, other times an utterly amoral, ruthless mercenary,’ said Legacy‘s co-showrunners Manny Coto and Evan Katz in a statement. ‘Carlos Bernard has done an amazing job portraying this dark and conflicted character, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with his return to the show.’
FOX clearly has high hopes for the show as 24: Legacy kicks off after the Super Bowl on Feb. 5. Continuing the series’ tradition, it then will air at 8 p.m. on Mondays.
