Doctor Aphra proved to be one of the driving forces of the standalone Darth Vader series. It was basically like Darth Vader had his own Han Solo/Indiana Jones working directly with him. While I’m disappointed Marvel ended the Vader series, I’m excited Marvel is continuing Aphra’s exploits with her own ongoing series.
Doctor Aphra #1 kicks off in December by writer Kieron Gillen (Darth Vader) and fan-favorite artist Kev Walker (Marvel Zombies). Film fans not remembering when she showed up in the movies? Not to worry, she’s an original character created for the comics.
Aphra has been a pretty spectacular addition to the saga. It might be a stretch, but I’d love for her to make an appearance in the movies whether in a spin-off film or in Episode 8 or 9.
The premise for the title sees Doctor Aphra hoping Vader doesn’t know she’s still alive while she searches for galactic treasure. Fortunately, she won’t be alone as her murderous droids 0-0-0 and BT-1 are tagging along for the ride.
‘What I wanted to do was show what makes Aphra tick,’ Gillen said in an interview with StarWars.com. ‘That’s the work I feel I’ve got to do with the character, and that kind of push and pull she has between the stuff she does, which is good and bad.’
There’s a lot of potential here as Aphra will constantly have to keep an eye out for the Imperials and bounty hunters in addition to whatever trouble she finds on her own.
