DC Comics reviews for 11/9/16 – All-Star Batman #4, Wonder Woman #10, Flash #10

Action Comics #967

Dan Jurgens definitely seems more comfortable with his direction for Action Comics. Following the underwhelming and overly long Path of Doom, the title has shown consistent improvement.

Issue #967 continues that momentum. After two quick, but necessary arcs focused on Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Jurgens gives some much needed attention to his series’ other main star — Lex Luthor.

Lex has been neglected early on in Jurgens’ run. This issue address that while serving as a reminder that Lex is an incredibly complex character and asset to the Superman books.

Meanwhile a pair of peace keepers have targeted one of the possessors of the S shield. Although they look like a pair of 90s era rejects, the duo has a desperate mission — stopping this person from assuming Darkseid’s throne and plunging the world into darkness. That plays nicely into the Superman: The Animated Series episode arc when Superman fell under the sway of Darkseid.

Tyler Kirkham’s art is showing signs of improvement as well. Kirkham isn’t letting his characters get lost in his detailed environments anymore and his framing is aiding his storytelling. The biggest improvement though is Kirkham’s take on Jon, which portrays him much more befitting a small child. Arif Prianto has a great eye for colors, but they lack much vibrancy to further help the story pop.

I’ve thought this comic was really going to hit its stride once Superman was forced to deal and reluctantly partner with Luthor. Jurgens took the scenic route in getting there, but the book is becoming a very enjoyable read over the last few installments. While Path of Doom was a chore to endure, Action Comics has found its sweet spot and the comic has become a worthwhile addition to the Superman titles reading pile.
