All-Star Batman #4

All-Star Batman continues to be the most bizarre Batman story told in years. It’s crazy, unpredictable and constantly entertaining. This is the one DC title that’s impossible to have any clue what’s going to happen from page to page let alone each issue making for an insanely fun road trip.

Scott Synder put Batman and Duke in a bad place last issue. Two-Face is still trying to get away from The Dark Knight and has his personal two-tone color coordinated Court of Owls’ Talons for backup. But then the KGBeast, Penguin and Black Mask get involved to further make Batman’s life miserable. Despite the carnage, Snyder never conveys that he’s flying by the seat of his pants with the story. There’s a wildness to it, but the Snyder never has his cast acting out of character.

John Romita Jr.’s art has a real grimy look that is making All-Star Batman one of the more unique and freshest looking presentations of Batman in a long time. Dean White might be the all star of the All-Star team with rich, bold colors that ordinarily would go against everything you’d expect in a Batman book, but it works tremendously here.

The issue ends with possibly the most over the top scenario for Batman and Duke yet. One thing is for sure. It won’t possibly play out like I expect.
