Issue #944 puts Team Batman into direct confrontation with The Victim Syndicate. Unlike most Batman foes, this group has a very personal beef with him and his vigilante tactics. Writer James Tynion IV tackles the Syndicate from a very thought-provoking place. They were placed in harm’s way due to Batman and they want to stop him and everyone that enables him. Adding Batwing to the team ranks was a smart move. He’d been an underutilized character in the waning days of the New 52 peak. Beyond a different skill set as an armored tech whiz, Luke is fully confident of his abilities and isn’t second guessing his place on the team. That’s already made for a welcome personality clash with Batwoman and should continue to be an engaging clash of philosophies constantly forcing Batman to choose sides. Red Robin tended to go along with Batwoman’s plans, but Batwing is used to being his own man and only occasionally teaming up with the larger Bat family.

Eddy Barrows is doing some of his best work on the title. His designs for the Syndicate make them standout even among a crowded, visually impressive Rogue’s Gallery. Barrows goes for unusually creepy poses for the Syndicate to give them a nightmarish sense. Whether action scenes or conversational moments, Barrows crafts the most cinematic perspectives. Adriano Lucas is challenged with some interesting choices and the colors expertly convey the story.

Detective Comics is the comic equivalent of watching an epic Batman movie. Issue #944 keeps one of the best titles in the DC lineup rolling. There’s absolutely no reason why any superhero comic book fan shouldn’t be reading this book right now.
