DC Comics reviews for 2/8/17 – Justice League of America, Detective Comics
Action Comics #973
Action Comics is vying for a Most Improved Rebirth Title award. After an initial arc that went on so long I was close to dropping it, the title has rebounded nicely as a suitable companion to the amazing Superman book. Issue #973 continues that positive trend with another solid issue.
Writer Dan Jurgens has done a commendable job in shifting the series away from nonstop action and devoting more time to the characters. One of the key components of the series’ turnaround is the expanded role for Lois Lane. Jurgens hasn’t limited her to just being Superman’s wife and focuses on her skills as an investigative journalist on two fronts this issue.
The pacing on the mysterious Clark Kent has been handled correctly with just enough bread crumbs to keep it engaging. It’s not playing out like Jurgens is making this subplot up on the fly and each issue has provided some interesting developments on that front.
Not to be left out, Superman sets off for a new adventure with members of ‘his’ extended super family. That surprise visit looks to have significant unexpected consequences for Superman with the return of an old foe.
Stephen Segovia is joined by Patch (Patrick) Zircher on art, resulting in some terrific art this issue. Segovia handles the Superman story while Zircher tackles the Lois Lane/Clark Kent pages. That’s a winning formula and one I’d be happy to see continue going forward.
Action Comics has steadily improved and the creative team has gotten this title back on track. If you gave up on it earlier, it’s time to give it another chance.
