DC Comics reviews for 2/8/17 – Justice League of America, Detective Comics
The Flash #16
Rogues Reloaded is playing out like an amazing series of boss battles. Writer Joshua Williamson is channeling a serious Mega Man vibe with the crazy fun arc readers have been awaiting since this run kicked off.
Williamson has set up this conflict with The Rogues masterfully. Each issue has played out like a stage. Flash battled Mirror Master in the first level and now he’s got to tangle with Heat Wave. Instead of being The Rogue punching bag, Heat Wave proves a formidable opponent … at least initially.
This arc has also been insightful for showing Barry Allen’s hope and never-ending optimism. While he doubts The Rogues have retired, Flash still believes they can revert from their criminal past and be a force for good.
Carmine Di Giandomenico is providing some killer art and his framing and anime-influenced style makes for a dynamic presentation. Ivan Plascencia’s colors stand out even more than normal as he manifests Heat Wave’s powers in full force.
With Rogues Reloaded, The Flash is on a serious roll and is zooming along as the best arc of the Flash’s Rebirth era. Given this issue’s cliffhanger, the fun has only just begun for a title that’s gotten a nitrous boost from the return of The Rogues.
