Wonder Woman #16

Wonder Woman #16 variant

Godwatch kicks off in Wonder Woman and the first chapter suggests this is going to be a very solid story arc.

Continuing the alternating past/current day theme of the title, writer Greg Rucka looks back at Wonder Woman’s early days as a hero. She’s the new hot story everywhere with her exploits charming everyone including Lois Lane.

Veronica Cale isn’t nearly as captivated, keeping a cautious eye on the new superpower. But Cale soon has a larger problem when two mysterious figures seek her help in trapping Wonder Woman.

Rucka’s storytelling continues to be more linear and easier to follow in the Year One era. Switching perspectives from Diana’s acclimation to society to those who view her as a threat was a smart and timely move. And Rucka started to connect the dots of Cale’s long term beef with Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman #16 interior art

Following Nicola Scott is no easy task, but new co-artist Bilquist Evely makes a solid debut. Evely has more of a classical, comic strip serial style that suits the storytelling well. This isn’t the same breathtaking visuals readers got spoiled with during Scott’s run, but the art holds up well.

While the art has changed the quality storytelling remains. Any fears the title would stumble in Scott’s absence appear unfounded, which is great news for readers.
