DC Comics reviews for 2/15/17 – Justice League, Batwoman, Super Sons

Super Sons #1

Super Sons #1 cover

Super Sons was announced way back at the start of DC Rebirth. It sounded promising, but then Patrick Gleeson and Peter J. Tomasi wrote essentially a preview in Superman #10 that further whet readers’ appetite. And if the first issue is any indication, Super-Sons is going to quickly join the ranks as one of the Rebirth era’s top titles. I had a suspicion I would love this title, but even with high expectations, this issue flat-out charmed me and kept me thoroughly entertained on every page.

Tomasi handles writing duties solo here, but the quality of the Superman title carries over with little trouble. Damian Wayne is bored in Gotham and travels to Hamilton County to catch up with his friend rival friendly rival Jon Kent aka Superboy. Between snowball fights and school bus exploits, the two continue developing their unique friendship. There’s a real sense of fun and youthful camaraderie that’s apparent early on.

It definitely helps that Tomasi previously wrote Damian in Batman and Robin. Damian is the type of character that could easily become annoying in the wrong hands, but Tomasi strikes the ideal tone to make him arrogant and good-hearted. In Jon, Tomasi has Damian’s opposite that plays out exactly like Batman and Superman working together back when they were 13.

Super Sons #1 interior art

Jorge Jimenez’s art helps the lively and fun-spirited feel. Jon and Damian look like kids and Jimenez has a very expressive style, ideally suited for this type of title. Colorist Alejandro Sanchez adds to the tone with bright, cheery colors.

For fans eager for Super Sons to arrive, rest assured it was worth the wait. Unlike some Rebirth titles, there’s no learning curve required. Super Sons is a fully-formed prodigy right from the start.
