Aquaman #17
While Aquaman’s new foe has a less than inspired design, the Warhead arc continues to shape up nicely.
Dan Abnett opts for a flashforward with Aquaman in the middle of battling his strange new foe. Don’t be alarmed that you missed an issue, Abnett ties the story together with an extended flashback. Aquaman starts feeling a nagging sensation of a force tapping into his aquatelepathy. After a pit stop at the United Nations, Aquaman finally finds the source and witnesses the full power at Warhead’s disposal.
As usual, Abnett weaves in some quality work from Aquaman’s supporting cast while showing Aquaman is a worthy, headlining top-tier hero. And while Warhead initially seemed to be a throwaway villain, Abnett adds a nice wrinkle that suggests he could be a worthwhile adversary.
Artist Scott Eaton provided strong work this issue. Eaton continues to improve on the title with more refined character facial expressions and better character movement. The one challenge with Aquaman’s constant artist rotating plan is it doesn’t allow one to establish any momentum. Eaton makes the case that he’s the most reliable candidate to handle the job full time without a dip in quality.
After the war with Black Manta and N.E.M.O., Warhead lacks that same threat level, but Aquaman’s Rogue Gallery definitely needs some beefing up. Abnett continues to make Aquaman an enjoyable and worthwhile read.
