DC Comics reviews for 2/15/17 – Justice League, Batwoman, Super Sons
Batman #17
Two issues in and I Am Bane is already shaping up to be the definitive chapter of this current run on Batman. Writer Tom King has amped up the threat level of Bane forcing Batman to take desperate measures.
One of the best aspects of King’s run is he’s not afraid to make Batman human. King’s Batman isn’t always 50 steps ahead of his opponents. He overreacts, makes bad decisions and can even get rattled. That’s on display again this issue with how Batman handles Bane’s not at all subtle threat against Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin.
This renewed grudge with Bane is a result from Psycho Pirate screwing up Gotham Girl’s head at the start of this run. Despite Bane lurking around, Batman carries out a risky plan to help balance her emotions.
But while Batman is distracted, Bane starts making good on his threat and targets Batman’s allies along with some pals of his own. Bane became an overused adversary, but King is restoring him to his full Knightfall glory. His Bane is menacing, scary and horrifying in a manner unlike any other Batman Rogue.
David Finch seems to have been eagerly awaiting this arc as his art has been stellar. King throws a lot at him from a surprise cameo, brief action skirmishes and Bane’s big return under the mask. Finch is up for the challenge with inspired work that fully conveys Bane as Batman’s boogeyman.
Batman has consistently vied for best Rebirth title honors. With this storyline constantly delivering, this is the one DC book you have to read this week if you can only grab one.
