DC Comics reviews for 2/15/17 – Justice League, Batwoman, Super Sons
Nightwing #15
Nightwing is arguably the most engaging best of both worlds character. He can go dark and brooding like Batman, but also has a playful, risk-taking side like Daredevil. Issue #15 doesn’t have a lot of action or crazy plot twists, but it’s the most enjoyable installment of this latest run.
The issue has a very unique presentation as it looks at more than a day in the life and focuses on two months of Nightwing’s relationship with The Defiler.
Making use of Dick Grayson’s unique status in the superhero community, Seeley has Nightwing discussing various stages of the relationship with his costumed pals. Nightwing has always been one of the more relational heroes of DC and that dynamic was played up well here.
A lot of times heroes are portrayed as being on this mopey, anguish-filled island, but Nightwing has best friends to call up, ‘brothers’ to joke around with, former teammates to compare notes and a father figure unlike anyone else.
Watching those interactions play out made for a very enjoyable read especially considering Dick had to play dead and be away from his family and friends for an extended period of time. And in a nice touch, Seeley shows Defiler’s perspective on this developing relationship as well.
Minkyu Jung’s art favors Marcus To’s work, but draws the characters appropriately older. It’s a subtle difference, but it does wonders for a story centered on a relationship. The characters need to look like adults in their mid-20s, not teenagers. Chris Sotomayor’s bright and vibrant colors work very well with this issue’s tone even if it looks slightly washed out.
This was my favorite issue of the new Nightwing. Hopefully, Seeley’s cliffhanger tease doesn’t ruin all the good will this issue earned. It deserves more than a cliché payoff.
