DC Comics reviews for 2/22/17 – Hal Jordan, The Flash, Suicide Squad

Hal Jordan and the
Green Lantern Corps #15

It’s always a treat when Ethan Van Sciver draws an issue of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Van Sciver’s hyper detailed pencils make every issue feel extra special. With writer Robert Venditti already delivering high quality work, that results in another excellent installment of this title.

John Stewart is enacting his new deal with the Sinestro Corps, but he’s not getting a lot of support from his fellow human Lanterns. Hal and Kyle are off trying to rescue Blue Lantern Saint Walker and Guy Gardner is off being Guy Gardner sizing up his potential Sinestro Corps partner.

What continues to make this title shine is how Venditti handles the Corp like a police squad. John is trying to do things by the book, but he’s got officers — or lanterns in this case — doing their own thing. There’s a great moment with Kilowog urging Hal and Kyle to get back to Mogo.

The adversary Hal, Kyle and Walker faced was handled too quickly to be a serious threat, but it allowed for Van Sciver to get creative with his layouts. Jason Wright might be DC’s best colorist, which is high praise, for how he handles the rainbow lanterns throughout the book.

This wasn’t a major, big event issue, but Venditti keeps delivering superior character work with a relatable, accessible format. And any issue Van Sciver draws is well worth grabbing. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps continues to do anything but disappoint.
