DC Comics reviews for 2/22/17 – Hal Jordan, The Flash, Suicide Squad
Wonder Woman #17
The second chapter of The Truth was a restoration of sorts on several fronts. First up was bringing two principal characters back to their familiar roles. Arguably just as important was the welcome return to form for artist Liam Sharp, who was uncharacteristically off with issue #15.
Refocused and back at his best, Sharp’s pencils were outstanding throughout this issue. Sharp ditched more of his elaborate layout designs and focused on more streamlined storytelling. The result was an overall smoother presentation with an easy to follow setup. Sharp was largely underrated while Nicola Scott shared artist responsibilities on the title, but if his work remains this consistent, he’s going to be considered the definitive artist of this run.
Writer Greg Rucka is well versed in capturing the tragic nature of Greek mythology to Wonder Woman’s world and he adds a fitting tale here. After seeing how these characters connect from the past and present storylines, this development is all the more tragic. That Rucka accomplishes this while giving Wonder Woman minimum dialogue is even more impressive.
Of all of the Rebirth books, Rucka’s Wonder Woman run is going to be the most impressive to read in an extended setting. The month to month format (of both the past and present tales) almost doesn’t do it justice. Wonder Woman has had some weak issues, but when it all comes together like this issue, there’s not a lot of books on the stand that can touch it.
