Fate of the Furious joins the billion dollar club

The Fate of the Furious easily retained its box office title for a third consecutive week. Most studios are laying low and not offering up new releases to get throttled by the eighth installment of the Fast and Furious saga and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Matching the feat of its predecessor, Fate joined the billion dollar club. This weekend’s $19.2 million haul takes the domestic gross to $192.7 million. Interestingly, Fate looks like it will be the third highest grossing film in the series behind Furious 7‘s $353 million and Furious 6′s $238 million. GOTG Vol.2 hits on the same fan base making it an uphill battle. Passing Fast Five $209 million haul seems a lock however.

Worldwide, the film has now earned $1.060 billion. For distributor Universal, Fate is the fifth film to earn over a billion. And this weekend’s haul was enough to put it past Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($1.05 billion). That now puts Fate at No. 21 on the all-time highest grossing list. It shouldn’t have a tough time catching Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.066 billion) and Toy Story 3 ($106.7 billion). Catching Beauty and the Beast ($1.142 billion) seems possible at this rate as well).

How to be a Latin Lover made a surprising showing to come in at second with $12 million. In third place was Baahubali 2: The Conclusion with $10.1 million. The latter was even more impressive considering it was only showing in 425 theaters. The Circle, the latest Tom Hanks film co-starring Emma Watson and John Boyega, didn’t screen for critics. That strategy didn’t appear to help distributor STX as the film still only managed $9.3 million despite opening in 3,163 theaters.

Rounding out the Top 5 was The Boss Baby with $9.05 million. That takes its total to $148.4 million in five weeks.  It probably won’t have enough steam to pass The LEGO Batman Movie ($174 million), but it’s still unchallenged for family dollars, which helps its chances.
