Wonder Woman #25

Greg Rucka wraps his Wonder Woman’s Rebirth chapter with a fitting conclusion for his captivating and thoughtful run.

In the end, Rucka’s run didn’t completely alter the status quo. Rucka basically pulled out the Wonder Woman universe of toys, played with them for awhile and neatly put them back on the shelf for the next writer.

For all writers looking to come onto a new book and immediately shake up everything readers have come to know and expect about the character, Rucka shows how it’s done. Shocking deaths, bizarre out of character moments and a disregard for the hero’s legacy aren’t needed when you have this total an understanding of a character.

That’s probably the greatest compliment to this run. Rucka shook things up for Diana and company for awhile, but ultimately left them with a vast amount of possibilities for the next writer to explore.

Rucka’s final story is fittingly titled Perfect, which ties in to a lot of themes during this run, most notably Diana’s Golden Perfect lasso. In a Justice League cameo, Superman and Batman notices its absence. Brief side note, Liam Sharp’s take on the Justice League really should not be reserved to this handful of pages. Since he’s leaving the book as well, hopefully some DC editor is already trying to woo Sharp over to the League.

Perfect is ultimately an epilogue to The Lies, The Truth, Godwatch and Year One. Rucka follows up with all the various key players from Steve Trevor, Veronica Cale and Etta Candy. There’s lots of terrific character moments here I don’t want to spoil.

Sharp and Bilquis Evely tag team on the art for their finale. Evely had such a tough act to follow coming in after Nicola Scott, but the art never felt like a major step down. Their art here is just as strong save an odd layout Evely used for a Wonder Woman/Cale showdown, which is meant to be threatening, but their close proximity makes it more sensual than intended.

Rucka returning to Wonder Woman was one of the major selling points of DC Rebirth for a lot of readers. At the conclusion of his run, all that hype definitely proved warranted and Perfect marked the ideal way to go out.
