We’re at that exciting time of the year where every NFL rookie is going to be a surefire Hall of Famer and fall TV shows are stirring up exciting for next season. After the tremendous response from last season’s Invasion crossover, the DC CW shows of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl will be uniting again — but maybe the fate of the planet won’t be at stake this time.
While speaking to EW.com, showrunner Marc Guggenheim suggested the heroes won’t have to fend off an alien invasion, but something much more emotional.
If we end up doing what we’re talking about doing, it’s going to be pretty cool. The crossover is always the most challenging thing we do, but it’s also the most fun. Every year we feel the pressure [to top ourselves]. I feel like each crossover has topped the previous one. Topping last year’s, that’s a high bar, if for no other reason than what do you do that’s bigger than aliens?
We’ve got some very, very exciting ideas…. Very early on in the process of doing last year’s crossover, Greg [Berlanti] said there’s probably no way to get bigger than aliens, so the best way to make the [next] crossover especially epic is if you can’t increase the bombast, increase the emotional stakes and the emotional payoffs, so that’s a very oblique comment on where our heads are at for this season.
My immediate gut reaction is the DC CW crossover this year could be an adaptation of Legends. That’s definitely a far more personal and smaller scale story. And it would be far less taxing on the effects team and be friendlier to the cast’s schedules.
In Legends, the DC heroes find themselves on the defensive after Darkseid lackey Glorious Godfrey fans the flames of panic and mass hysteria over their actions. This is DC’s equivalent to the story of Job in the Bible. Darkseid plays the devil analogy asking The Phantom Stranger (in the role of God), wagering that he can break humanity and have it turn on its heroes.
Over the course of the mini-series, the Justice League is disbanded with a new one rising from its ashes, Captain Marvel is tricked into believing he killed a villain, the Suicide Squad loses its first member and Robin nearly gets killed after being trampled by a mob.
It’s not too hard to see how the DC CW characters could fit into that story. The Legends would be the team that sees its roster changed. Supergirl could easily play the Captain Marvel role. Cisco or Speedy could play the sidekick hurt in the fray all culminating in the united battle against Godfrey’s forces.
Since an actual appearance of Darkseid is unlikely, the shows could just suggest his involvement as the force behind Godfrey. That’s my pick. What crossover would you like to see adapted or are you hoping for an all-new story?
