DC Comics reviews for the week of 7/19/17
Super Sons #6
Finally able to work alongside Robin with his parents’ permission, Superboy is set for a night of doing good. Until he gets ditched when the Teen Titans need Robin’s help cracking a case.
After the recent batch of issues suggested maybe the book was starting to lose some momentum, this was a nice return to form. Writer Peter J. Tomasi was starting to lean too heavily on the bickering heroes dynamic so I was glad he eased up this issue. Jon and Damian have enough various personality quirks that Tomasi has plenty of material to work with anyway. In one especially great sequence, Clark and Lois shut Jon down when he uses the old ‘Damian’s father lets him stay out late at night’ routine.
Tomasi further shows off with an excellent take on the Teen Titans, which reads better in a lot of instances than their book. I’m still awaiting some explanation why any of them indulge Damian, Tomasi framed his leadership more like the price to be a team than an obligation.
Jorge Jimenez’s return on art was very welcome. Jimenez has a casual animated style that works beautifully for Superboy and Robin without going overly cartoonish. Jimenez makes simple scenes like Jon and Damian busting a jaywalker seem dynamic. Alejandro Sanchez’s color work was exceptional this issue as well. Sanchez really gets the most out of the costumes and does outstanding work on lighting effects like street lights and billboards.
Tomasi brings out an underutilized DC villain to be this arc’s obstacle. With the final page surprise and a winking nod to a recent acclaimed comic book movie, this looks like it’s going to be another really fun arc.
