Green Lanterns #27

Green Lanterns #27 cover

It’s so rewarding watching a title find its way after the initial growing pains. Green Lanterns has hit a really nice stride lately and that momentum continued with Baz and Cruz in a Land of the Lost style planet.

Writer Sam Humphries has worked out a lot of the kinks with the title — the constant bickering and Cruz’s lack of confidence. Now, Baz and Cruz are a strong unit capable of working together in any crazy scenario from giant birds and figure out when Volthoom dropped them off.

Humphries appears to be winding down the saga of the original Green Lanterns and finally teases how those stories connect to Baz and Cruz’s ordeal. I was somewhat impatiently waiting for the payoff, but it looks like Humphries is going to deliver.

Ronan Clinquet returned as artist, which is a welcome move for the title. Too often Green Lanterns suffers from a constant artist rotation so it’s nice to see one do two consecutive issues. For all of the crazy scenarios Humphries tosses at him, Clinquet delivers clean and precise pages with some terrific work on Baz and Cruz’s faces.

This issue was a lot of fun. It’s great seeing these still relatively inexperienced lanterns getting pushed to their breaking point with no one to rely on but each other. I’m really enjoying how Humphries has gotten the title on track. Green Lanterns has quietly become a consistently good read the last couple of months. With Baz and Cruz’s latest adventure, it doesn’t look like that is going to slow down anytime soon.
