JJ Abrams directing Star Wars Episode 9
JJ Abrams is back to direct his second installment of the new Star Wars trilogy. Abrams has been announced as the replacement for the ousted Colin Trevorrow.
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Walt Disney and Lucasfilm have become risk averse with new directors after a slew of hiring missteps. Abrams has been one of the few filmmakers who’s been able to stay in lockstep with Kennedy. The only other viable option was The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

Johnson seemed to take himself out of consideration with the announcement he was looking forward to watching Episode 9. If nothing else, Lucasfilm and audiences should have a pretty good idea what to expect with Abrams concluding the Sequel Trilogy.
Maybe the big question though is how much of Episode 9 will be a ‘spin’ on Return of the Jedi?
Under Abrams’ watch, The Force Awakens was essentially a Star Wars remake. There wasn’t a whole lot of creativity and it played very safe. If that’s the case, here’s a few not so bold predictions for the Abrams-led Episode 9.
To recover Finn, Rey has to retrieve him from a gangster warlord
This will be an awesome showcase of Rey’s fully formed Jedi powers…which were already in full gear with The Force Awakens. Scratch that. This will be a great way for Rey to show she can defeat giant monsters, bounty hunters and slug warlords on her own while Finn, Chewie, Poe and Rose look on.
Luke Skywalker will die early on
Maybe in some rainy hut back in his isolated hideout. Luke will tell Rey she’s the final Jedi, but she has to defeat Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snook first.
Poe will lead the charge to destroy the new and improved Starkiller base

Only this time, it’s even more dangerous since it’s half completed and has a shield generator on another planet.
Adorable furry creatures will help turn the tide against the First Order
The sophisticated First Order won’t be any match for the Resistance’s new allies — unicorns with rainbow colored tails
Kylo Ren will help Rey defeat Supreme Leader Snook
After watching Rey get paralyzed by Snook’s lightning, Kylo Ren will opt to help his sister(?)/cousin(?). He probably needs to die too, but hopefully Rey will remember to take his helmet so the next Kylo descendant won’t have an ashy artifact.
