Super Sons #8

Their team-up with the Teen Titans was just the beginning as now Superboy and Robin battle on the Planet of the Capes. Super Sons always manages to feel like such a welcome fun change of pace from the norm. DC has done a much better job of not making its books doom and gloom, but Super Sons continues to feel special with its lighter tone and growing bond of its two leads.

Picking up from last issue, Superboy and Robin are whisked away to a strange realm. Writer Peter J. Tomasi puts a fun spin on the Ego the Living Planet. This adversary is much more aggressive and is after something in Superboy and Robin’s possession. Fortunately, they get some help on this strange world with Big Shot and Hard Line. I’m already a big fan of their designs and hope they will be part of Super Sons beyond this arc in some capacity.

Artist Jorge Jimenez infuses this issue with better than his already lively pencils. Jimenez gets creative with his layouts, using hair as the canvas for flashbacks and a good variety of panels. This book always thrives on Jimenez’s work and it’s encouraging to see him still challenging himself.

Tomasi has let up on the constant bickering between Jon and Damian. That’s made for better dialogue as their exchanges aren’t always so antagonistic and they’re sounding more like actual siblings. Sure, they’re going to have the occasional flare-up, but not throughout 22 pages.

Super Sons #8 is such a fun ride. This book rarely disappoints and this was another winner. The wait between issues felt longer than usual and this issue won’t make that feel any shorter.
