Aquaman #28

Aquaman is such a complete title right now. It’s vying for best regular book in DC’s slate with Batman and Superman.

Trying to keep his identity a secret has been challenging for Aquaman. With the gangster Krush fully aware he’s still alive, Aquaman and Dolphin must stave off his minions to stay off the radar.

Meanwhile, Vulko and Ondine are searching for passage into the treasury. Their adventure is proving to be a lot of fun with elements of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Mera isn’t sitting out either as she’s enlisted Tempest’s help in taking down the Crown of Thorns. Concerned about even the slightest challenge to his authority, Corin Rath dispatches his forces to stop them.

There’s so much to like about the book. Writer Dan Abnett doesn’t have a weak subplot and all three are compelling. While books like Dark Nights: Metal reveal Aquaman will eventually get free, the way this story is progressing, I’m in no rush to wrap up this new direction for the title.

Aquaman is the one main book that’s fallen behind from the regular every other week schedule. But it’s so worth it for Stjepan Sejic’s art. Sejic does Kevin Maguire-level expressive characters. Their postures and expressions are so vivid, the dialogue almost isn’t needed to convey the story. That truly stands out in the sequences with Aquaman and the mute Dolphin.

If your money is low this week, there’s a lot of good options vying for your dollars, but Aquaman at this point is clearly worth the investment.
