Green Lanterns #31

Baz and Cruz’s confrontation with Volthoom ends in a very unexpected manner. I liked that Sam Humphries went a different direction. Besides, last issue already featured the cataclysmic battle royal and this made sense in the grand scheme of continuity.

Volthoom wasn’t the kind of opponent that could be dealt with in typical fashion for Baz and Cruz. He was too powerful and they were running out of allies. Humphries comes up with a smart twist that underscores a key problem with the Guardians and why Lanterns are so essential.

I really hope Ronan Cliquet stays on board. His art is such an ideal fit for the book. Cliquet has clean lines, expressive characters and a good sense of perspectives. This arc has gotten a much needed visual boost and ended on a high note.

In hindsight, given the buildup, I wish Humphries did more with the First Lanterns than make them Volthoom cannon fodder. He wrote them a little too interesting for just one mission.

With Out of Time wrapped, Baz and Cruz are headed back home. This was an enjoyable arc and I’m optimistic Humphries can continue his momentum.
