Justice League #29

Despite some occasional logistical hiccups, Justice League #29 kept rolling with the best JL storyline since Rebirth began.

They’ve played nice with the League and were overjoyed to reunite with their parents, but the League’s offspring must resort to desperate measures to save the future. Even if that means killing Wonder Woman. Writer Bryan Hitch gives Wonder Woman a terrific showcase here as she battles a junior Justice League solo.

But it’s not just Wonder Woman being attacked. One by one Future Aquaman ambushes them Terminator style and quickly defeats them using some of Batman’s gadgets. Batman’s preventative measures have been in place for decades, but it’s a little frustrating seeing them always be so infallible.

There was something that irked me about Future Aquaman not capturing Batman like the others. Batman is arguably the most formidable Leaguer when he knows about his opponent as opposed to Jessica Cruz if her ring is taken. This felt more like Hitch giving himself an obvious cheat to turn the tide in the League’s favor.

Artist Fernando Pasarin continues providing stellar art. I wonder if a lot of the problems with Hitch’s earlier issues could have been soothed with Pasarin’s pencils? Pasarin has few rivals in crafting action scenes and with an action-focused installment, this was a terrific looking issue. Brad Anderson had some great spotlight moments for his always impeccable color work.

Hitch has set several interesting events for a strong home stretch. I really wish Hitch was bringing this level of storytelling consistently and had Pasarin handling art from the beginning. This feels like the Justice League we wanted all along.
