Hal Jordan and the
Green Lantern Corps #34

With the Guardians missing, it’s up to the Lantern Honor Guard to track them down. Writer Robert Venditti has done a tremendous job showcasing the very distinct personalities of lanterns Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner. The fun in this guardian hunt is seeing the various ways the lanterns go about getting information. Venditti has a firm grasp on the characters, but if I had one small complaint it’s Venditti could stand sharing the spotlight a bit on some of the other lanterns besides the main four humans.

Hopefully that will occur soon as the latest Lantern enemy, the returning Controllers, won’t be an easy out. Venditti spends some quality time building up their threat, which is important to differentiate them from the Manhunters and various lantern corps. By the end of the issue, they look like they’ll be a fittingly tough challenge for the corps.

Working off of breakdowns by Tom Derenick, Jack Herbert finishes the artwork. As a big fan of Herbert, I’m enjoying his work on the title. He gives the Controllers a menacing edge that based off their design isn’t always easy. Every issue so far at least one panel or page features a truly iconic shot of the main hero/heroes. This one likewise doesn’t disappoint and could easily be the marketing image for Hal Jordan for months to come.

This is always a title that’s at its best when the opposition is strong. Venditti is making the Controllers a significant problem and Twilight of the Guardians is shaping up to be another strong arc.
