Hal Jordan and
the Green Lantern Corps #37

hal jordan and the green lantern corps #37 variant cover

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps doesn’t allow for any time to settle after last issue’s significant change to the status quo.

Writer Robert Venditti addresses how the Guardians will fit in with the established dynamic of the Corps under John Stewart’s leadership. I’m assuming Venditti plans to revisit how Guardians 2018 will differ from their predecessors and the potential conflicts should be interesting providing there’s some meaningful adjustments to the Lanterns/Guardians relationship.

But the big focus of this issue is the kickoff to Zod’s Will as Hal and Kyle inadvertently discover where the ex Suicide Squad member and his family have relocated.  I’ll withhold full judgment to see where Venditti takes the story, but Hal going off more half-cocked than usual seemed silly when facing off with a guy as powerful as Superman. Predictably that doesn’t end well. Superboy Prime killed a slew of lanterns and he was hardly a master tactician. The lanterns’ odds aren’t great against Zod alone so adding his family might stack the deck too much.

Rafa Sandoval returns after a long break. Sandoval is very skilled at setting up these lively pages without them looking too cluttered. Jordi Tarrangona’s ink work was a little too thick particularly in some character’s faces.

It’s nice to see Venditti still has some fresh ideas for the title and can keep mixing up the sparring partners for the lanterns. It will be very interesting to see how he makes a battle against a small Kryptonian army a fair fight for his heroes.
