Wonder Woman #40

Swan’s Song wrapped up this issue, which is for the best as the once promising arc never quite managed to click. The issue picks up right after Silver Swan battled Wonder Woman and Jason with an unsatisfying payoff to last issue’s cliffhanger.

Writer James Robinson is still trying to pin down Diana’s voice and she treats Jason more like a mother than a sister. Robinson seems to understand this dynamic isn’t working and finds a mystery-laden way to move beyond it.

Most of the issue is just one big slugfest after another with Diana trying to break through to Silver Swan in order to help her friend. The resolution is a little too simple and seems like the kind of solution Wonder Woman should have used a few issues back in order to save lives.

There’s a brief interlude segment to catch us up on Steve Trevor and his forces’ battle with the Female Furies. It’s not the kind of sequence that gets done sufficient justice in so few pages and Robinson probably would have been better suited just skipping it altogether.

Emmanuela Lupacchino and Carmen Carnero team up for the pencils. Carnero appears to handle the Trevor sequence while Lupacchino takes the main story. Some of Luacchino’s pages lack definition, but she always does strong work with the important elements. The color work by Romula Fajardo Jr. and Hi-Fi seemed a bit muted and washed out.

Robinson brings a familiar face back to the fold, which hopefully will lead to some interesting developments for the next arc. And offer some more insight into Trevor’s subplot.
