Action Comics #997

If Booster Shot really has to be Dan Jurgens’ last Action Comics arc for awhile at least he’s ending his run on a high note. Superman and Booster Gold are stuck in the future battling General Zod and his family, which is oddly a familiar theme this week. Meanwhile in the present, Lois Lane and Jon desperately try to save her father, General Lane, before his execution.

Jurgens juggles the time jumping plots smoothly with well laid out transitions. It’s always refreshing to see Superman battle against opponents at his power level so he can cut loose. Booster Gold somewhat feels out of his class however, so he doesn’t play a particularly meaningful supporting role this issue.

Lois’ subplot has some interesting surprises including keeping Jon’s super powers a secret from her father. That’s a new twist for the Superman title and I’m hopeful that’s something Brian Michael Bendis will further develop when he starts his run on Superman and Action.

Brett Booth’s return was well suited for this action heavy issue. He throws in more complex layouts than a lot of his peers and does a great job of conveying the movement during the fight scenes. Booth still tends to draw characters with the same elongated style face, which really looks odd with Superman and Booster.

The final page offers a real shock and will require some legit creativity from Jurgens to address. It’ll be fun seeing how he pulls that off.
