Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Black Panther is obliterating box office records. The Marvel Studios film set another one for the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a $108 million second weekend.
That takes the film to an incredible $400 million domestic tally. After only 10 days, Black Panther is the 29th highest grossing movie of all-time. It’s already eclipsed the total of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($389.8 million).
It’s just $59 million behind Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is No.13 on the all-time list. By this time next week, Black Panther will crack the Top 10. Now it’s a matter of it will will pass Marvel’s The Avengers ($623 million) for the No. 5 spot.
Black Panther beat Avengers’ MCU second weekend record of $103 million. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has the best second weekend with $149 million, but Black Panther is far and outpacing The Last Jedi, which only had $368 million by the 10-day mark. It’s path to a Top 10 all-time finish is all but assured now.
The film isn’t leaving much room for anything else at the box office despite a slew of newcomers.
Game Night fates the best with a modest $16.6 million in its opening weekend. Peter Rabbit gathered $12.5 million to take its tally to $71 million in its third week for the third slot.
Annihilation had a low turnout with $11 million. With a $40 million budget, the film will make a profit, but this seems a case where a potentially profitable film suffered from the misfortune of getting caught in the wave of a massive event film.
Fifty Shades Freed took the fifth spot with $7 million to take its total to $89.5 million in three weeks.
