DC Comics reviews for 2/28/18

Action Comics #998

Dan Jurgens wisely didn’t wait until issue #999 to wrap up Booster Shot. That led to a very strong conclusion to Jurgens’ last major arc as the writer of Action Comics.

Superman and Booster Gold were out of options as they were confronted by General Zod’s family. There’s a nice symmetry with Action Comics and Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps both dealing with Zod’s crew. Jurgens concocted a clever resolution that didn’t feel like a cheap cop out. The other major resolution seemed to go against a key element to time travel, but it kinda had to play out that way. Jurgens also provides a definitive answer regarding Mr. Oz’s identity, which will be great assuming Brian Michael Bendis doesn’t wipe everything out.

As usual any issue Will Conrad draws looks amazing. However these DC creative teams shake up, hopefully Conrad has a steady regular gig. He’s way too good to not be on a key title.

Jurgens did right with Booster’s exit from the arc, which definitely re-energized my interest in seeing Booster back in the main DCU. This was a strong penultimate chapter of Jurgens’ run and a good read for Superman fans.

Rating: 10 out of 10
