Hal Jordan and the
Green Lantern Corps #40
Sometimes it’s fun to just have a good old fashioned Green Lantern throw down. That’s exactly what Robert Venditti and Rafa Sandoval do in the fourth chapter of Zod’s Will.
And when you’ve got Space Ape and a giant battling General Zod and family there’s no need for award winning dialogue. Venditti has a good sense for the pacing of the battle as both sides get some big shots in before the momentum shifts to the other faction. It was great seeing other lanterns get more of a turn in the spotlight for this battle. Venditti tends to keep Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and Guy Gardner at the forefront and neglecting other fun lanterns. This time, Venditti writes some fun moments for more than just his human lanterns.

Sandoval gets to really cut loose with the art this issue as he explores more of the other lanterns’ approaches to combat. While they all have the same weapon at their disposal, it’s fun seeing the creative spin an artist will take on showing how they will use their rings to aid them in fights.
Zod and his family definitely make for different opponents for the Corps and they make for a tough out even for the Corps’ best. This has been a really fun storyline as it’s more of a simple throwback to good guys fighting bad guys. Maybe it’s not as brainy as some of the other reads on the market, but I’m really enjoying it.
