Mister Miracle #7

Big Barda gives birth and Mister Miracle has to keep some surprise guests in line in the waiting room. That’s the premise for this issue. Why does it work? It’s hard to pin down. Writer Tom King just has this knack for making such an out there premise connect.

Whether it’s Scott and Barda trying to agree on a baby’s name, reminiscing on some of the torture drills from Granny Goodness or the Female Furies patiently waiting for the newest New God, King finds the humanity in the situation to make it strangely relatable. King amazes with how precisely he has the Furies’ voices down and why they’re some of Jack Kirby’s best creations.

Artist Mitch Gerads keeps amazing me by how versatile he can make a nine panel layout. Some pages that results in slightly repetitive panels, but taken as a whole, it’s all part of a very creative setup that really pulls the reader in. The color choices continue to be smart and convey emotions so strongly.

This wasn’t the most eventful episode of this series, but this felt like a fitting time to cool down and make a big moment out of an intimate milestone in the lives of Mister Miracle, Big Barda…and even the Furies.
