March Bashness 2018 is underway and we’ve got the 1st Round Winners. Thanks to your help in voting and spreading the word, the tournament is taking shape. Just like March Madness, March Bashness 2018 saw some surprising results…including a No. 1 seed falling.
Some of the matches didn’t necessarily go the way I expected particularly in one region. There were two potential No. 7 seeds that I thought stood a good chance of beating the No. 2 seeds. While one happened, it wasn’t either of the two I suspected. The real fun for this is trying to come up with a logical way for the teams to progress in the 1st Round. Thankfully, I’ve been watching a lot of mid-80s wrestling so my booking creative tank is full. Let’s see how the action broke down!
(1) The Dudley Boyz vs. (8) Team Madness
1st Round Analysis: I was curious if Macho Man nostalgia would win out here, but voters correctly remembered that this was Macho Man running on fumes. Capable of having some big moments, but nowhere close to being a dominant wrestler. The Dudley Boyz’s teamwork ultimately would prove too much for Team Madness.
Tally: The Dudley Boyz – 81% (134 votes) def. Team Madness – 19% (32 votes)
(2) Legion of Doom vs (7) Ken Shamrock & Big Boss Man
1st Round Analysis: While some Attitude Era teams still get lots of love, The Corporation’s big duo were mostly considered an afterthought by voters. The Legion of Doom definitely got the job done here and proved maybe they should have been a No. 1 seed all along.
Tally: Legion of Doom – 90% (146 votes) def Big Boss Man and Ken Shamrock – 10% (16 votes)
(3) The Rock n Sock Connection vs. (6) The Natural Disasters
1st Round Analysis: The Natural Disasters put up a good, respectable fight against a team that could be one of the dark horse contenders to win it all. Their second round match will make that clearer.
Tally: The Rock n Sock Connection – 68% (110 votes) def Natural Disasters – 32% (51 votes)
(4) The Enforcers vs. (5) Big, Bad and Dangerous
1st Round Analysis: I’d set up the brackets to pay off an angle I started last year with Vader and Bam Bam wanting to take out The Dudley Boyz, but voters respected The Enforcers way more than I anticipated. This led to some very creative booking as I couldn’t figure out how they could beat these two powerhouses. I like the receipt angle and Zbyszko being an active participant in the Enforcers advancing by knocking out the ref while the Dudleys did their dirty work.
Tally: The Enforcers 63% (102 votes) def. Big, Bad and Dangerous – 37% (60 votes)

(1) The Hart Foundation vs. (8) Cody and Golddust
1st Round Analysis: The Hart Foundation didn’t have any problem putting away its first found opponent and didn’t entertain any thoughts of a Cinderella story. The good news is the Rhodes Brothers are fine.
Tally: Hart Foundation – 90% (144 votes) def. Golddust and Cody Rhodes – 10% (16 votes)
(2) Demolition vs (7) Batista/Rey Mysterio Jr.
1st Round Analysis: I thought just maybe Batista in his prime and a still quick Rey Mysterio would be a tougher challenge for the ‘weaker’ Demolition lineup, but Demolition crushed the former Smackdown tag champs.
Tally: Demolition – 86% (139 votes) def Batista/Rey Mysterio Jr. – 14% (22 votes)
(3) Money Inc. vs. (6) The Wyatt Family
1st Round Analysis: Not nearly as close as I thought and I figured the rotating Wyatt members would make for a fun gimmick in future rounds.
Tally: Money Inc. – 68% (108 votes) def. The Wyatt Family – 33% (52 votes)
(4) Sting & Lex Luger vs. (5) Vitamin C
1st Round Analysis: I kinda thought this one would be closer, but Sting and Luger did compete against some of the best teams in wrestling in Tully & Arn, The Road Warriors, The Steiners, Harlem Heat and The Outsiders so this decent combo of Jericho and Christian didn’t prove much of a challenge.
Tally: Sting and Luger – 74% (119 votes) def. Vitamin C – 26% (42 votes)
