DC Comics reviews for the week of 5/2/18
Deathstroke #31
For your authentic Batman kick this week, Deathstroke is the best option as Batman vs. Deathstroke continues.
Slade and Wintergreen are off on a mission that quickly goes off the rails forcing Deathstroke to take some desperate measures to retrieve his property. Bruce Wayne is also learning the players in this conflict and shifting allegiances threaten to destroy them both.
Priest makes this confrontation very entertaining with some funny moments including a Batman/Deathstroke face off in the desert. I’m really enjoying Priest’s take on Bruce Wayne as he adds some new wrinkles to his personality that makes sense for a modern billionaire. The Batman scenes are just as interesting.
Carlo Pagulayan and Roberto Viacara’s artwork is very impressive. Their sense of storytelling is fantastic with sensible layouts from Larry Hama making for quite the cinematic feel. Jason Pax’s ink and Jeromy Cox’s colors complete a strong visual presentation.
Priest has set up a cool twist on the spy vs. spy dynamic and inserted Batman and Deathstroke in the mix. It’s a formula that a lot of writers probably couldn’t pull off, but Priest is making this an incredibly fun arc that has me eagerly awaiting the next installment.
