Aquaman #37

I’ve been a big fan of this Crown of Thrones storyline in Aquaman. The extended delays? Not so much. The delays have really dulled some of my enthusiasm for the arc especially since there’s no telling how many weeks it will be until the next chapter. Aquaman started out on the same release schedule as Batman, which is now on issue #49. That’s killed some of the momentum from what’s otherwise been a very strong arc.

So now when we get new Aquaman issues they really have to deliver. Fortunately, that’s almost always been the case. Aquaman and his allies learn the full power of Corum Rath with the arrival of another group that cold turn the tide. Pun seriously was not intended.

Writer Dan Abnett has set up a very fun and epic story and now it feels like it’s nearing that Helm’s Deep point and all hope is lost. Abnett works in some nice character beats for the supporting crew while continuing to put Aquaman in a heroic and regal light. I definitely think this run will be better appreciated once it’s complete and collected.

It only takes a few pages of Riccardo Federici’s art to understand why the delays are necessary. Federici’s pages aren’t slopped together and it’s easy to see all of the hard work put into them. This book takes a while to come out, but the end result is worth it. Sunny Gho’s colors look fantastic with his art style making for a artistic presentation that truly stands out.

This arc isn’t over yet as Aquaman isn’t going to have an easy win here. That’s going to make the eventual victory even sweeter. Hopefully we won’t have to wait months for the next installment.
