Batman #49

Tom King never goes for predictable. In an issue set up to be Catwoman vs. The Joker, the actual conflict doesn’t play out at all as expected. It’s weird, captivating and wholly fitting with King’s Batman run.

Catwoman goes to rescue Batman from Joker’s clutches and the two end up having a prolonged discussion about their criminal running buddies, happiness and what makes Batman tick. It’s a very interesting character study of two Batman Rogues who’ve known him longer than most. And it’s exactly the kind of out of left field encounter that’s made this run so captivating to some and frustrating to other readers. King doesn’t invite a lot of middle ground and this issue won’t likely have readers changing sides.

If you need something predictable on Batman, it’s Mikel Janin’s artwork. His pages are always strong and his take on The Joker is haunting. Despite the one setting story, Janin keeps it fresh with various perspectives and lighting.

Joker’s perspective here is interesting and further shows the complexities of a madman. This is the last issue before the presumed disastrous Batman and Catwoman attempt to get married. We’ll see how that turns out, but this was an enjoyable warm-up.
