Man of Steel #4

Geesh, did this issue prove there is a grave injustice in comics today that Kevin Maguire is not regularly working on a DC comic.

There’s nobody who’s come close to capturing the level of emotion and expression in characters than Maguire. I’ve been a fan of his since Justice League and the guy hasn’t lost a noticeable step yet.

Every page was incredibly packed with detail and so much personality in every character even in the background. If there’s no other reason to appreciate Brian Michael Bendis working on Superman it’s that he got Maguire to draw another a full issue of Superman. And another pair of DC A-listers. Add in Alex Sinclair’s outstanding colors and this is one of the sharpest books on the stands this week.

This was the big showdown issue of Superman and Supergirl battling Rogol Zaar. I like the insight Bendis is providing in how Superman approaches his fights from civilian rescue to attack strategies. These little touches are encouraging in how Bendis will tackle the character in the long run.

I’ll need to revisit some of Dan Jurgens’ Action Comics run to determine if there’s some continuity issues with the reveal of the man in the ship visiting the Kents. I won’t spoil it now, but there does seem to be some hiccups here.

The ending is very abrupt, which was probably the intent. That would be more of a problem if the next issue wasn’t coming in seven days. I’m enjoying this mini series and Bendis is crafting it in a way that the story doesn’t feel stretched out. I’m ready to see where he takes us on this ride next week.
