Wonder Woman #49
The Dark Gods storyline keeps delivering for Wonder Woman. It’s been a great mix of action and overwhelming odds for Diana and her allies.
Writer James Robinson seems invigorated with this arc and has struck a good balance of maturing Jason as a character and Wonder Woman trusting him to be a more competent ally. She’ll need the help as most of her allies have already fallen to the Dark Gods. One slight hiccup in this arc is it would have been nice for Robinson to work in characters not typically associated with Wonder Woman that are just as resistant to the Dark Gods’ influence.
Robinson added a lot of action this issue and Jesus Merino’s artwork was more than capable of meeting the challenge. With some strong layouts, good perspectives and lively action sequences, Merino is making a case that he should be the regular artist for the book. There’s no complaints from me on that end.
With next issue the big anniversary milestone, I’m confident Robinson has an explosive finale in store to wrap his run on the title. In a way this reminds me of Bryan Hitch’s tenure on Justice League. Hitch’s run was marred by inconsistency, but his final arc was easily the best work he’d done on the book. Robinson’s Wonder Woman has been oddly fixated on Jason, but as it’s winding down, he’s wrapping it up on a high note.
