Green Lanterns #50

Dan Jurgens wastes little time easing in to his next role after two years on Action Comics. Evil’s Might is an ominous name for this arc, but as this special anniversary size issue plays out, it’s warranted.

Green Lanterns joins Batman as the only books regularly scheduled for this week to hit issue 50 at the appointed milestone. While it doesn’t receive the fanfare of Batman, this is a strong testament to the editorial and creative team for sticking to the release schedule.

There won’t be a drop off in quality with Jurgens on board and his debut issue already packs some solid character work, some unexpected events and a murder mystery.

One immediate change under Jurgens’ watch? Making Baz and Cruz feel like part of the Green Lanterns Corps and less the JV team stranded on Earth. Jurgens also brings in some Lanterns that haven’t gotten much page time since the start of Rebirth. This story is set after Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #50 so it will be interesting to catch up and learn how that impacts Green Lanterns in six more weeks.

Joining Jurgens is artist Mike Perkins. The artwork is a vast departure from previous Green Lanterns artists who tended to favor a more animated and playful style. Perkins’ art is rougher, but much more realistic befitting Jurgens’ tone on the title.

Under Jurgens’ guidance Green Lanterns looks to be on firm stable footing for the first time in months. Evil’s Might has a lot of promise and quickly establishes a fresh new tone for one of Rebirth’s most enduring titles.
