DC Comics reviews for the week of 7/4/18

Justice League #3

We’re three issues in, but this version of Justice League is already shaping up to be the most fun and unpredictable ride since Grant Morrison’s beloved run.

Writer Scott Snyder isn’t worried with sticking with traditional, established modes of storytelling. He’s taking this trip down another, far more exciting path where there’s a feeling that anything is possible…and likely.

Hawkgirl and Batman are fighting invasion forces…in Superman and Martian Manhunter’s bodies while The Flash leads a team into The Still Force. And we learn that Sinestro has tapped into an entirely new spectrum with the Ultraviolet Corps? It’s crazy, unexpected and a total blast.

Along the way, Snyder is injecting some much needed personality to the team. Some previous creative runs just treated the Justice League like a strike force with interchangeable pieces. Snyder takes time to dive in to the personality quirks and clashes like Flash questioning the physics of Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet and Hawkgirl calling out Batman’s posturing.

Artist Jorge Jimenez has stepped his already impressive game up. Jimenez was one of those fast rising stars for DC, but now he’s showing his time is now and he’s ready to shine brightly in the spotlight. With the concepts and ideas Snyder is throwing out Jimenez can’t do anything but rise to the challenge. One page in particular is so effective and menacing that it truly felt like watching a pivotal scene in a movie play out.

I don’t know what else to say about this issue outside of it finally feels like the Justice League is back.
