Over the last few days, the casting announcements and rumors for the Fast & Furious spin-off are revving up. Idris Elba is set to play the big bad in the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham film.
Variety reports that Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) is wrapping up negotiations to appear in the film. David Leitch (Deadpool 2) is directing the film, which was written by longtime franchise screenwriter Chris Morgan.
Elba will join his Prometheus co-star Charlize Theron as the latest bad guy in the series. Theron played Cypher in Fate of the Furious, the film that piqued so much interest in Johnson and Statham teaming up for a spin-off. On July 4, The Crown star Vanessa Kirby was also revealed to be in final negotiations to join the cast.
I’d be thrilled if Elba’s character was a smooth, villainous James Bond style character to play off those rumors that he could one day be 007. Since that doesn’t seem all that likely, playing that kind of role in a Fast and Furious film might even be better.
The spin-off is scheduled for a July 26, 2019 release date. This adds another presumably mega blockbuster to an already competitive 2019 field what with Avengers 4, Wonder Woman 1984, Captain Marvel, Shazam! and Star Wars Episode 9.
