Green Lanterns #51

Green Lanterns continues its makeover as writer Dan Jurgens is taking the title in an entirely new direction.

With Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps wrapping up in another two issues, the fallout is yet to be revealed. One thing that’s clear is Green Lanterns is Baz and Cruz are part of the majors now.

Baz and Cruz are at the center of a storyline where Mogo is dealing with a massive weather crisis, a Guardian is dead and John Stewart might soon be joining them.

I’m intrigued by this mysterious new villain and his armada. A few kernels of information in regards to what he’s doing besides causing massive disasters and killing off Green Lanterns would have been nice. Jurgens has earned patience as a storyteller though so I’ll wait to see how he plays it out.

The tone of the book is far more serious than the previous regimes. It’s nice to see Baz and Cruz alongside their fellow Lanterns dealing with big threats, but I hope the personal nature of the characters doesn’t get lost for the latest threat of the month. It is nice to see more Lanterns in the mix that Jurgens can use to interact with Baz and Cruz.

Mike Perkins provides the book with a grittier, more realistic art style than readers have grown accustomed. In some pages Perkins’ art is a little harsh, but in others it looks fantastic. Hi-Fi’s colors are superb as always providing a nice level of vibrancy to the artwork.

Outside of a few really strong arcs from Sam Humphries, Green Lanterns has always felt like a title trying to find its way. Jurgens and Perkins seem to have a firm direction that’s already making the book a more intriguing and engaging read.
