Batman #53

batman 53

It’s easy to see why Tom King was a tad annoyed with the BatCat wedding spoilers. They cheated readers of getting the full story and as King has proven with the excellent post-wedding arc, he’s just getting started.

Bruce Wayne is one of the 12 jury members deciding Mr. Freeze’s fate. The interesting catch is Bruce’s main argument is that Batman is not God.

This is a pretty meta commentary on Batman as King breaks down his character on a deeper level to reiterate that Batman is only human. It’s an amazing character study and fitting epilogue to the wedding storyline.

Lee Weeks’ art continues to be a highlight of this arc. Weeks gets one page to spotlight some of Batman’s greatest rogues. It’s so well done that I’d love to see DC turn it into a poster or print. Elizabeth Brietweiser’s color work has been incredible and this issue was some of her best on this arc.

I’ve really enjoyed this arc and the final page of this issue should have classic Batman fans psyched. After this arc and Bruce’s new mission statement, Batman might be better than ever in the Rebirth era.
