Justice League Dark #2
James Tynion IV took all of his superhero team experience from Detective Comics, added a liberal heaping of magic and once again has a team book that has quickly achieved can’t miss status.
Tynion has such an incredible way of tossing characters together that have only the slimmest connections and making it seem silly no one thought to unite them before.
When the Justice League Dark lineup was announced, a lot of folks wondered why Constantine wasn’t part of the team. While Constantine isn’t officially a member
For continuity nerds like myself, Tynion even addresses a question about Dr. Fate before it becomes an issue. One aspect of Tynion’s writing that I’ve always appreciated is he doesn’t sweep away character development he doesn’t like. Instead, he just works with it instead of acting like it never existed. His instincts haven’t failed him yet especially with his take on Dr. Fate.
Alvaro Martinez Bueno’s art is getting better each issue — not a small feat considering he was one of DC’s best kept secrets during his Detective Comics run. I’m a big fan of Brad Anderson’s colors as he’s one of the best in the business. This title keeps him on his toes with magic effects, ghoulish characters and extreme shifts in visual moods.
Tynion ends the issue with a creepy cliffhanger and I’m fully expecting this to be the norm from here on out. This book didn’t take long to find its groove and is definitely one I’m anticipating each new issue.
