The Flash #53

flash 53

The introduction of other Forces is a good sign that The Flash still has a ton of mileage in terms of fun and surprising storylines.

If Flash War was a little too serious any heavy, writer Joshua Williamson borrows a page from vintage Flash stories with a modern Silver Age twist. How else would you explain The Trickster tapping into the Strong Force and becoming a Hulk-sized behemoth? And the twist at the end proves the joke might truly be on The Flash.

Williamson also dives in deeper with Iris West dealing with memories from pre-New 52 while conducting her own investigation into the Forces. I like the idea of Iris taking a more active and vital role in the series. This issue also begins Williamson providing a glimpse into Commander Cold’s origin with s twisted take on a Flash supporting cast favorite.

Christian Duce should keep the artist gig as long as he wants it. Duce has a more traditional style than some of the previous artists, but he’s got a good sense of storytelling and page structure. Luis Guerrero’s colors are appropriately bright and heavy on overall sunnier tones.

The Flash remains one of DC’s most consistent titles and this was another example of why it will remain a top tier book so long as Williamson is at the helm.
